Information technology (IT), refers to all that businesses use computers to do. Information technology includes everything that businesses use computers for, including building and maintaining communications networks, protecting data, managing databases, and helping employees with problems on their mobile devices or computers. There are many career options for those interested in this field.

It’s difficult to emphasize the importance of information technology at work. This includes checking our email, analyzing numbers on our laptops, and organizing a conference over cloud-based software. What exactly are we talking about when discussing IT?

Information Technology Definition

is a 1958 Harvard Business Review article that introduced the phrase “information technology”. Harold J. Leavitt, and Thomas L. Whisler both defined information technology in a variety of ways.

Sixty-six years later, it is clear that Leavitt & Whisler had a great idea. Information technology is now a term that covers everything businesses use computers to do. Information technology includes the creation and administration of databases and communications networks, data security, information protection, and helping employees with problems with their mobile devices or computers.

There are many career options in information technology. These range from small consulting firms to large multinational corporations to highly technical specialties to managerial ladders that require strong people skills. These are just a few of the possible routes that you could choose:

  • Computer Specialist – This position requires a bachelor’s degree. It is a great fit for those who enjoy answering questions about computers and setting up equipment. This position requires a solid understanding of all types of software, including databases interface programs, environment tools development, and operating system software. According to BLS, the median annual salary for this position is $53,000. This field is growing faster than the average.
  • Computer Systems Administrator – Most employers require a bachelor’s in computer-related fields. However, some employers may ask for an associate degree. These jobs are available to professionals with no prior experience. In 2018, the median salary was $82,000. This job involves daily tasks such as maintaining and backing up computer networks, troubleshooting problems, and backing up data. This job requires you to be able to use database management software as well as web platform development and network monitoring tools.

  • Computer Systems Analyst – This job is also called system architect.
